- * Followers with a lower level cap (such as Jenassa) have higher stats (Health, Magicka, and Stamina) and skill points (One-Handed, Sneak, etc.) per level than other followers with a higher or no level cap. For this reason, it can be wise to have a follower with a lower level cap up until your character exceeds their level cap, then trade your follower for another.
Non-humanoid followersEdit
Non-humanoid followers can be used alongside any humanoid follower, which means that the Dragonborn can have one human and one non-human follower simultaneously. Most non-humanoid followers cannot be given items and thus cannot use equipment, the exception being Riekling.
Non-humanoid followers cannot be married, become Stewards, nor can they become a Blade. But some of them do have unique interactions when your character tries to do something underhanded.
Compliance to these criteria is measured in three levels: A, AA, or AAA. Desperately Seeking Information About Followers in Skyrim

Anyone else tired of followers not being able to keep up with you? After running for no more than 10 seconds, followers are already far behind. Is it possible to create a mod that makes followers stay close behind you, even when sprinting? I'm aware of the console command setav speedmult <number> but that doesn't fix it. I noticed that the reason is because they delay for a second or two after you've started running, before they do. I suppose you would have to change the time before they start running, I don't know how possible that is--that's why this is in the mod request section

I had parked my follower at an inn with a bunch of valuable items that I didn't want to carry. I guess I have been out a bit too long as this message appears:
Your follower tires of waiting and leaves.
There have been other situations where my follower has mysteriously disappeared as well.
How can I find my follower when they get up and leave or disappear into thin air?

When a follower mysteriously disappears, there are one of three things that have happened:
- They're dead. Sorry. If you want your stuff, you'll want to find where they died. If she was with you up to just recently, backtracking shouldn't be too difficult.
- They bugged out. This one's pretty easy to resolve: enter a new area or fast travel somewhere. They'll be right behind you.
- They went home. This is what the message refers to. Return to where you picked them up originally: in the case of Lydia, that means Breezehome (if you've purchased it) or Dragonsreach in Whiterun.

For PC, you can enter console commands (get to the console by pressing the tilde key, which is ` or ~ on your keyboard, usually under the Esc key and to the left of the 1 key):
They get lost a lot so I do this a lot. I just memorize the RefID. Like for example, Lydia's RefID is
a2c94
and Iona is a2c93
So for example, to move Iona to me, I put in:
Sometimes, you have to enter it twice. Like this:
Sometimes, they might have died. then you need to resurrect them. So do this:
If you've ever had a terrible pregnancy but survived, you will be labelled a 'survivor mom' (not visible in-game) and any further pregnancies will have massively increased risk.Personally, I like to breed my female rulers like crazy with Genius men. Being under the age of 19 also increases risk. The age risk starts at age 27 and keeps growing intermittently until age 50 (though pregnancies stop at age 45, so technically it tops out at age 45 as that is the latest time you can normally give birth), and the risk with number of children starts at 3 children and then increases at 4 and 5. Crusader kings 2 buildings. Traits, illnesses, and health can affect the risk positively or negatively.
NOTE: if you resurrect them it will remove all their inventory! If they had items, it's better to go to a previous save where they have not died!
NOTE: If you press the up-arrow on your keyboard it goes to commands you typed previously. However, when you close the game then your command history is erased.

Followers will wait for you up to 3 days at the location you instructed them to.
Once your 3 days are up, you'll get the 'Your follower tires of waiting and leaves' message, they will return to the location you initially 'hired' them from.
In case of Housecarls, like Lydia, they will either return to the keep in their respective cities, or your home in said city (assuming you purchased one).
In case of mercenaries, they'll just return to the bar/inn/where-ever you hired them from.
Friends that become your companions return to their hometown and continue their daily NPC cycle.

Nevermind. It seems that the follower simply goes home where you can recruit them again. The follower still has all items.
In case of Lydia:
Skyrim Followers Keep Up Lyrics
Lydia will simply go back to Dragonsreach. or Breezehome
If you use mods, it seems possible for the follower to end up in other places. After searching for hours I once found Lydia in jail by finally using console command to teleport to her. I believe that this was an effect of Ultimate Follower Overhaul mod for PC.

If you're playing on the PC, try teleporting your follower to your location through console commands. This is easier and faster (no loading screens) than going to your follower's location and getting him or her to follow you again.
Console commands to teleport your follower to the player's current location:
prid <RefID>
moveto player
prid
targets an entity - your follower in this case. Search for your follower's RefID at the UESP wiki's 'Followers' article. (Another method to target instead of using
prid <refID>
is to open up the console and then click on an entity, this will automatically do prid <RefID>
for the clicked entity. However, this method won't be useful in your situation as the follower is not near your vicinity, and can't be clicked on.)moveto player
moves the targeted entity near the vicinity of the player.Your follower should now be near you after doing this. If for some weird reason, he/she is dead (happens sometimes), use the console command
resurrect 1
. Your follower should go back to life.If for another weird reason, your follower is still not near your vicinity after doing this, he/she may have been 'disabled' from the game (might happen with NPCs that are long dead), making him/her not appear in the game. Type
enable
in the console to remedy this. If he/she still isn't up, type resurrect 1
again. More info on console commands at the UESP wiki's 'Console' article

I had an issue with this on PC version. I told Lydia to wait. Previously, she had spawned back in Dragonsreach but for some reason this time she did not. So.. I used a console command to move myself to her. Oddly enough, it ported me right to the keep in Dragonsreach (where I was already when I used the command.. and where I expected her to be) and everything seemed fine afterwards. Seems to me like there is some kind of bug relating to this considering she had not died and she suddenly appeared only after I used the command to move to her. The command is:player.moveto
I suggest you save your game prior to using this command.. also.. don't use it while mounted.. I did.. and I think because it ported me inside.. it then proceeded to crash not just my game but my computer and had to reboot. You can find the RefID for NPCs here:
If you are not on the PC version I would suggest what Mark Trapp mentioned.

They go back to where they came from, or sometimes if you go there too fast, they are still on their way back (really doubtful they almost teleport) or if you haven't received the message saying they got tired, and you go where you left them, they died.

I was helping Vilkas go to the temple and on our way I made a pitstop at a dungeon.
Inside the dungeon he would get hit only once and be down on the floor with barely any health..
Inside the dungeon he would get hit only once and be down on the floor with barely any health..
So, I'm curious if followers have levels and if so how to do you check it and get them leveled?
Generally I don't take a follower because they ruin my sneak attack, don't do anything useful or end up getting killed because they stand right in front of me.
If there is a similar question on here please direct me.I've searched but haven't been able to find anything useful as of yet.

Followers have stats just like the player in skills and health. Those values are static and are set the first time you enter/load the zone that they are in. There are also maximum level caps for followers should your level be higher than that the first time you encounter them.
For example, most people meet Lydia very early on and she'll end up being locked in with 100 health and skills in the 20s, so she won't be as effective as Jordis (the housecarl you get in Solitude) whom you'll usually meet much later on since the house costs 25k gold to purchase.
If you are on the PC, there is a way to force an NPC to level up by resetting them:
- First, remove all the gear from the follower (at least the ones that you want to keep).
- Walk up to them, be as close as possible, open the console with the ~ key
- Click on your follower. When you do so, a string will appear at the top of your console that represents your follower's reference ID.
- On your console, type disable, then follow it up with enable
After this, your companion will be 'reset' to match what your current level is. Their health and skills should be improved.
Finally, keep in mind that all followers fall under a general category: warrior, thief, or mage. Lydia, for example, is a warrior and will never gain a sneak skill above 15 no matter what level you meet her at.

While you can't change the archetype of a follower you can modify their skills. If you are a assassin/thief type character and you still want Lydia to sneak around with you. Open console, click on Lydia, type 'forceav sneak 100' this will set her sneak skill to 100.

From the UESP wiki's 'Skyim Followers - Follower Stats' article:
A follower levels up according to the PC's level up to the follower's maximum level (which varies for each). With few exceptions, each follower has a maximum level, and a specific set of primary skills, which are dictated by their class.
Prior to patch 1.6, a follower's skills, health, and other stats were set when they were first spawned (which is typically when you enter their starting cell, become a Thane, and so on) and would not increase as their level increased. Prior to the fixing of this failure of stats to update with patch 1.6, players could update a non-essential follower's stats so they would increase based on their current level by using the Wabbajack to polymorph them into another creature, after which their stats would update upon recovering their original form. Players of the PC version could also use certain console commands to fix any follower's inability to update their stats with each level.
So in most cases, leveling up the player character will also make your follower level up, (the maximum and by how much, will depend on the specific follower and their NPC class).

House yarls level up thmore you use them. But not other followers such as one you would find in a tavern. So if you use a specific character more then they will get stronger. But they do have limits, such as Lydia. She can level up in warrior skills but not much in magic or stealth.
that random guythat random guy
Every follower has a certain set of skills from the start. Since Skyrim patch 1.6 the level of followers scales with your level even after you met them the first time (although most followers have a maximum). You can find the the professions and maximum levels of every follower at the UESP and wikia wikis.
There is a mod named Ask Follower Skills (Nexus/Steam)to check out the current level and the skills of your follower.
When you enable this mod, save a game and load it again you can ask the follower What can you do? and this will give the stats like that (Faendal as example):
